Do you plan to travel in the next few days? Or do you simply want to know if you contracted the COVID-19 disease?
With Australia coming back to shape by opening up for international travel, a rapid antigen test will probably play a huge part in limiting the spread of the virus. It may become the go-to type of testing for airline travels, accommodations, school attendance and even entry to ticketed events.
Testing using a rapid antigen test helps ensure the safety of travellers or individuals attending large-scale gatherings and community events. It’s a fast and cheap COVID-testing alternative. A rapid antigen test is cheaper than a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test and can be used anytime and anywhere. Additionally, results from this test are available within minutes.
Australia is catching up with the world in using rapid antigen tests. The current situation may result in a growing demand for these antigen test kits for sale. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has already approved a number of these rapid antigen tests for use in Australia, but they are only available for use in aged care, health care, schools and workplaces. However, some simple versions were also developed to be used at home, just like pregnancy tests.
How Does a Rapid Antigen Detection Test Work?
A rapid antigen test is typically used in the diagnosis of respiratory pathogens. This immunoassay detects the presence of specific viral antigen and helps rapidly identify those who have high levels of virus. By doing so, these people who are most likely to be infectious or at the peak of infection can be quickly isolated from the community. Other control measures can also be done to prevent transmission.
A rapid antigen test is done on nasopharyngeal or nasal swab specimens that are placed directly into the extraction buffer or reagent of the assay. It works the same way as the PCR tests done in clinics: you have to stick the swab up to your nose, add the nasal swab into a chemical solution and put that solution on a reactive device or strip of paper. That chemical solution breaks the virus open and frees specific viral proteins. These proteins, if present in the solution, bind to the antibody that’s on the paper strip or reactive device.
A rapid antigen test is applicable to anyone of any age, and it doesn’t need to be processed in a laboratory. Results can be available within 15-30 minutes, so you won’t need to wait for a day or more in isolation.
However, the test’s sensitivity is lower than that of a typical PCR test which can detect one RNA molecule in a microlitre of solution. On the other hand, a rapid antigen test needs a sample to contain thousands of virus particles in a litre to obtain a positive result. This is the reason why a person with a low amount of virus in the body may test negative in a rapid test, but it’s a false-negative result.
At Dexcon, we take pride in our Australian-made COVID-19 antigen rapid test kits for sale that are ATG-approved. They satisfy Australian standards, are easy to use and can give results within 15 minutes.
The Australian Government requires everyone who is travelling to Australia to give proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test before departure. Sometimes, airlines may also ask you to take a rapid antigen test and provide a negative result prior to your flight.
If you need proof of negative coronavirus status to fly, get our simple to administer rapid antigen test. It offers high specificity and sensitivity. Results are also easy to interpret and let you make fast decisions about your travel plans.
Currently, an antigen rapid test for home can only be used under direct supervision of a qualified health professional. But the TGA has already approved some COVID-19 self-tests or home use tests for supply in Australia starting November 1, 2021.
