Why Are N95 Masks Vital for the Healthcare Sector?

For the past two years, masks have become part of our daily essentials. In fact, the global market size of face masks in 2020 was USD 17.84 billion and is predicted to continue growing up until 2028. This trend shows how vital face masks are in living in the new normal.

Masks are effective in controlling the spread of the disease and allow various industries to survive amid the pandemic. People are able to move from one place to another and still feel safe, knowing that they won’t infect others or catch the virus from others with the help of a mask.

Among the commonly available masks is N95. Read on to learn more about what N95 mask is and why it is important for the healthcare sector.

What Is N95?

N95 mask, which is also called the filtering facepiece respirator, is a specific type of face mask commonly used in certain workplaces, such as the hospital. It is a piece of regulated protective equipment and must meet the set standard of safety. In Australia, the Therapeutic Goods Administration is responsible for regulating face masks and respirators

N9 mask is a gold standard for protection against COVID-19 because of its top-grade filtration. The letter N refers to ‘non-oil’, which means it is best used in work environments that do not have oil-based particulates. The number 95 signifies the efficiency percentage of the mask. In addition, N95 can filter particles as small as 0.3 microns, making it the best for an environment that has a risk of contamination from droplets and aerosols.

When wearing N95, it should rest properly on your face covering the nose and mouth. It’s the ideal type of mask because aside from the filtration, it has a better fit as it sits tightly on the face. This reduces air leaks. The N95 respirator face mask is also made from polypropylene fibres and can be tough to exhale.

N95, KN95 and P2 Masks

These masks can be confusing, but the differences are quite simple. N95 masks are produced in the US with an efficacy rate of 95%. They have a good seal around the face, meet the standard of NIOSH in the US and are approved by the TGA in Australia.

KN95 is a mask manufactured and accredited in China with an efficacy rate of 95%. However, KN95 is not approved for use in Australia and New Zealand because it does not have a good fit due to the ear loop design.

P2 masks passed the Australian standards (Australia/New Zealand AS/NZA 1716:2012). Their straps allow for a better fit in the face and can filter oils, which is important in a non-medical environment. They are similar in quality and efficacy to N95 and approved by TGA.

Despite the differences, these masks are capable of preventing infection.

What Face Masks Should Not Be Worn During the COVID-19 Pandemic?

In the early days of the pandemic, there was a shortage of masks around the world, and health care workers were severely affected by the lack of supply.

Cloth masks and surgical masks were popular because they were the available option for many. The problem with fabric and surgical masks is the fit. Unlike N95, these types of masks have loose edges that allow for air to move.

Another type of mask that is not recommended is the mask with an exhalation valve. Any asymptomatic person can still spread the virus because the valve allows for contaminated air to move outside, thus not helping in controlling the spread of the disease.

Mask is designed to limit the movement of air and restrict the travel distance of infected droplets. Anything that has valves or holes will not be effective in preventing the transmission.

N95 mask is the ideal mask to wear. Unlike in the previous year, there is no longer shortage of N95 respirator masks, and the supply is steady.

N95 is vital for the healthcare sector and consumers because it provides the best protection against the transmission of the COVID-19 virus. However, N95 respirator face masks should not be limited to healthcare settings only. In fact, people working in other industries, such as cleaning, customer service or any job that requires contact with a lot of people, should opt for N95 masks for optimum protection.

If you’re looking for the best N95 respirator mask, always check for standard certifications. Proper application and disposal of masks are also important to minimise contamination.
