Why Face Shields Are Great for Those Who Need Protection

Why Face Shields Are Great for Those Who Need Protection

Face shields double your protection against the coronavirus.

The most current studies and developments reveal that the novel coronavirus spreads via infectious respiratory droplets. This is why you must take proactive safety measures and utilise personal protective gear to protect your health and well-being.

The general public is encouraged to wear face masks to stop the spread of the virus. Using safety face shields in Australia over a mask when out in public or attending to a sick person at home is also crucial to further avoid contracting the virus.

Similar to a face mask, a face shield must be worn properly, put on and taken off correctly. The visor must cover the face entirely, especially the critical areas of the nose and mouth. The visor's design must be curved to stop water droplets from entering or exiting the visor through the sides. Moreover, the face shield must be adequately sized and extend beneath the chin.

Do you want to know more about the benefits of a face shield and how it boosts your protection from the COVID-19 virus? Read on.

Benefits of Face Shields

Prevents Face Touching

Putting on a face shield at all times when venturing in public is a crucial precautionary measure. Safety face shields in Australia are an excellent protective barrier and keep you from touching your face after contact with an infected surface. With the tendency of many people to touch their faces to adjust their masks, shields work better compared to face masks in stopping autoinoculation. They prevent hand to mouth transmissions.

Sterilisation

Another remarkable benefit of face shields is that they can be sterilised after every use, which is not always the case with fibre and disposable face masks.

Face shields are made from durable and thick transparent plastic sheets. They can be reused after cleaning and drying thoroughly for optimum protection against potential infectious diseases.

Safety face shields or medical face shields in Australia effectively block infectious droplets from reaching the face without losing their effectiveness and integrity after becoming wet with splatter and splashes.

Eye Protection

In contrast to face masks, face shields protect the eyes of the wearer. This ensures droplets that might contain a virus cannot directly reach the wearer of the face shields. For this reason, in addition to face masks, the public is also encouraged to wear a face shield.

How To Properly Clean Reusable Face Shields During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The correct use, storage and cleaning of masks and shields are critical to making them as effective as possible.

Reusing disposable safety face shields in Australia is not recommended and must be discarded at once after use. Reusing should only be considered if there is a critical supply issue.

In the case of sufficient supply, the manufacturer’s instructions for use must be followed. In the absence of instructions, it is crucial to seek advice from an infection control consultant prior to reusing face shields. The following are the two options for cleaning and disinfecting reusable medical face shields in Australia.

Option 1

Hospital workers, as well as the general public, often clean and care for their own safety face shields in Australia, which leads to varying levels of cleanliness and disinfection.

  • Wipe the face shield’s inner area first, followed by the outside of the face shield using a clean cloth with neutral detergent solution or a wipe.
  • With a TGA-registered solution or TGA-registered wipe, clean the outer area of the face shield by carefully using a clean cloth.
  • Wipe clean the outer area of the face shield with clean water to eradicate residues. To improve clarity and visibility, wipe the face shield with alcohol.
  • Completely dry the face shield. Air dry on hooks to ensure the face shields do not touch one another.
  • Place the face shields in a well-ventilated storage area.
  • Sanitise your hands after cleaning the face shield.

Option 2

In hospital settings, the collective disinfection of face shields is recommended.

  • The person undertaking the mass disinfection must wear a PPE.
  • Put the face shields in a container with a neutral detergent.
  • With a TGA-registered disinfectant or TGA-disinfectant wipe, clean the outer area of each face shield carefully utilising a wipe or clean cloth.
  • Wipe the outer area of the face shield with clean water to remove residues completely.
  • Dry each face shield individually.
  • Prevent contamination from the previous steps by applying preventive measures, such as a different person wearing gloves drying the shields.
  • Ensure that people undertaking the disinfection perform hand hygiene before and after the procedure.
  • Place the face shields in a well-ventilated dry location for redistribution.
